The joy of having friends and family visit can sometimes be overshadowed by the stress of providing a suitable place in your home for them to stay. Creating a guest cottage in your greenhouse will provide your guests with a relaxing place to stay and allow you to enjoy the visit without worrying about having enough space for everyone.

Planning Considerations

An attached greenhouse (one that shares a wall with your home) will not require as much planning as a freestanding greenhouse. A freestanding greenhouse can be located anywhere on your property, which can provide privacy. If you would like to offer your guests access to a bathroom in the greenhouse, sewage lines will need to be considered during the planning stages. Utilizing an attached greenhouse for guests will provide access to the bathroom(s) in your home, with no extra planning needed.

Plants and people have different requirements as far as temperature and humidity are concerned; creating greenhouse zones will help ensure a comfortable environment for both. By incorporating a folding glass wall or glass curtain wall into your greenhouse design, separate areas can be created for plants and people. Adding an environmental control system will allow you to create a comfortable space for each zone's inhabitants.

Privacy

Providing privacy to your guests in a room with glass walls may seem like a challenge, but several available solutions, including shades, glass choice, and furniture. There are various shade options available for the interior and exterior of the greenhouse; shades can be operable, fixed, or mounted, depending upon your requirements. The use of tinted or patterned glass in the greenhouse walls that make up the guest area is also an option. The patterned glass will obscure the outside view but still allows light to pass through the walls. Stand-alone privacy screens can be used to create a changing room for your guests as well.

Interior Design

Decorating the guest space in your greenhouse is the key to making friends and family feel comfortable. Purchasing a bed frame and dresser from a second-hand store not only saves you money, but it is an environmentally-friendly option. You can stain and paint these pieces to match any aesthetic you desire.

A sitting area that faces the greenhouse can be created by adding a chair and small table to provide your visitors with a place to relax. Decorating the guest space with plants from the greenhouse will create a cohesive look and feel.
