Website Marketing Mistakes — 5 Top Things to Fix Even if You Know Nothing about Website Design

It annoys me when I am in the market for a computer and the salesperson asks, what are you going to use the computer for? I consider myself unique, but not so unusual that I’d have out of the ordinary uses for a computer. So, I understand, you are going to use your website to market your services. You need to know the worst website marketing mistakes and the top 5 things to fix on your site, even if you know nothing about website design.

1. An all Flash or photographic site.

I have been told by those in the know that an all photographic or Flash site is difficult for the search engine spiders to scan. If the spiders can’t crawl your web pages looking for content, you might as well be invisible, as you will not be highly ranked on search engines.

2. Music that plays in the background.

Did you now that the majority of people look up something while they are at work? Now, knowing that others will hear them the entire time they are on your site, how do you feel about blasting jazz or Caribbean music in the background? Please remove the music or at least make it optional. That tiny volume button doesn’t help. By the time you find it, it is too late and most will have left your site in a hurry just to run from the music.

3. Not enough information.

85% percent of visitors report going to the internet to seek information. Make sure that you have enough text-based information on your website. Ask what you would want to know, and then supply the information. Your information should be printable directly from the website so that it can be taken and shared. That means on a light background that doesn’t use all the ink in someone’s printer.

A static website that is not updated frequently is a dead website. Add content consistently. Make your website worth visiting often by including facts, press releases, tip sheets and other friendly informational offerings.

4. Building a wall between you and your visitor.

Where are you? How can you be reached? If you are really afraid to share your e-mail contact, create a secondary e-mail address. You’ll scare away visitors if the only way they can reach you is by signing up on your website, not knowing who you are or where you are. Make your company name, address and phone number available by highlighting, dragging and dropping—it is the primary method most people use to capture information and place it into contact software such as Outlook.

5. Mysterious navigation.

Your website navigation needs to be simple and intuitive. So simple that a monkey could access the site, and guide his way through it. If your website navigation relies on buttons, rolling over pictures, finding drop down menus you come across accidentally, and more dead ends (no way to get back to previous or next page) than the topiary maze in The Shining, you need to rethink your navigation.

Fix these top 5 website marketing errors and you will be on your way to having a website that is more effective in marketing your goods and services.
